Features & Materials

Responsible material selection, careful workmanship, and attention to detail are unalterable principles for Duravit. Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, the special properties of each Duravit material can be utilized to their fullest potential. As a result, the products are not only aesthetically appealing, but also easy to clean and durable.

Sanitary ceramics

Sanitary ceramics are a classic material for bathrooms and are often used for sinks, toilets, and bidets, for example. Sanitary ceramics are therefore also one of the most common materials used by Duravit.

Manufacturing

The base material for Duravit sanitary ceramics consists of natural raw materials: clay, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. It is poured into plaster or plastic molds (die-casting process). Subsequent processing, such as drilling tap holes, requires manual work. The glaze consists of quartz, chalk, feldspar, and the mineral dolomite and is applied by hand or by glazing robots, depending on the model. Toilets and urinals are also completely glazed on the inside, a feature of the highest quality. The extremely high temperature resistance of the material allows a firing temperature of around 1,280 °C.

Material properties

Sanitary ceramics are heat-resistant and lightfast. The hygienically smooth glaze is abrasion- and scratch-resistant as well as easy to clean. This makes it the ideal material for sinks and toilets. Features such as the innovative ceramic glaze DuraShield® further enhance these properties.

Sanitary acrylic

Sanitary acrylic is also frequently found in bathrooms. Bathtubs and shower trays in particular are often made from this lightweight material.

Manufacturing

The starting material for sanitary acrylic is acrylic (PMMA*) sheets of various thicknesses. The sheets are cut to size and then thermally molded. The deep-drawn acrylic base is reinforced on the underside with wood and a glass fiber-resin mixture. After cooling, polymerization takes place in the glass fiber-synthetic resin mixture. Depending on the tub model, acrylic panels are invisibly attached.

Material properties

Sanitary acrylic is a lightweight material with a non-porous, smooth finish that feels pleasant and warm to the skin. The material is solid-colored, UV-stable, and colorfast. With its white sheen, sanitary acrylic is a perfect match for the white glaze of ceramic objects in the bathroom. Shower trays and bathtubs made of sanitary acrylic are easy to install due to their relatively low weight, robust, and can be cleaned effortlessly with standard household cleaning agents.
