Building and product certifications with Duravit

Environmental labels such as EPDs and certifications from DGNB or LEED provide a reliable basis for planning sustainable buildings. They facilitate the implementation of ecological standards and offer clear guidance for construction planning. Below is an overview of all Duravit certifications relevant to planning.

Product-related eco-labels:

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) document the ecological quality of building products and can be used for sustainable building assessments. EPDs are Type III environmental labels and are based on the international standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804. They are an important tool for architects, specialist planners, engineers, and auditors, as EPDs provide comprehensive information on the environmental impact of building materials throughout their entire life cycle, including CO2 emissions, energy and water consumption, and waste generation. EPDs are crucial for the certification of buildings according to systems such as DGNB, LEED, and BREEAM.

Map of Germany showing areas of responsibility

Duravit has created Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for sanitary acrylic, sanitary ceramics, and DuroCast® Plus/Ultra. These document the environmental properties of the products and provide a transparent basis for sustainable construction. The EPDs are verified and published by independent auditors and the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) in accordance with international standards.

The IBU is a leading organization for environmental product declarations in the construction industry and is committed to greater transparency and resource conservation in construction. As an active member, Duravit supports this initiative to provide scientifically sound environmental information and promote sustainable planning processes.

EPD for sanitary ceramics from Duravit:

Duravit sanitary ceramics are made from natural raw materials such as clay, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar, and fired at over 1,200 °C. The material is particularly resistant, durable, and ideal for Toilets, vanities, and bidets. The glazed finish is scratch-resistant, hygienic, and easy to clean—perfect for private and heavily frequented public bathrooms.

EPD for sanitary acrylic from Duravit:

Sanitary acrylic from Duravit consists of solid-colored acrylic that is molded into shape and then reinforced. The material is lighter than ceramic and offers a high level of comfort thanks to its non-porous, warm finish. It is mainly used for bathtubs and shower trays, as it can be processed flexibly and is pleasant to the touch.

EPD for DuroCast® Plus/Ultra Resist from Duravit:

DuroCast® Plus and Ultra Resist are mineral composites used by Duravit to manufacture freestanding vanities and bathtubs. The cast forms enable precise designs with delicate edges, while the matte finish is particularly resistant to scratches and cleaning agents.

Building certifications:

DGNB and LEED

German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)

As a member of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), Duravit supports the DGNB system, which enables an objective assessment of the sustainability of buildings and neighborhoods over their entire life cycle. The DGNB does not certify individual products, but rather assesses their impact on the sustainability of a building. The system shows how building products contribute to resource conservation, environmental compatibility, and the long-term efficiency of a project. EPDs provide important environmental indicators for this purpose—such as CO₂ emissions, resource consumption, and recyclability. In addition to EPDs, there are other relevant certificates that are used for the DGNB's well-founded sustainability assessment.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Duravit is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), supporting an internationally recognized body that promotes energy-efficient and resource-conserving buildings. One of its key initiatives is the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system, which evaluates sustainable construction according to clear criteria.

LEED-certified buildings are particularly energy-efficient, reduce operating costs, and contribute to the health and well-being of users. They also promote the use of renewable energies and environmentally friendly materials—an important contribution to sustainable construction.

Company-related evidence:

ISO standards

ISO standards are internationally recognized standards that guarantee the quality, efficiency, and safety of products, systems, and services. ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization, an international association of various standardization organizations. Duravit complies with ISO standards for quality, environmental, and energy management.

ISO 9001

Duravit has been certified according to the international ISO 9001 standard since 1999, which demonstrates compliance with quality management standards and at the same time strives for a continuous improvement process. This helps Duravit to consistently deliver high-quality products.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). For Duravit, this means improving its environmental performance and operating in a more environmentally friendly manner. This includes identifying and controlling environmental impacts, complying with legal requirements, and continuously improving environmental objectives.

ISO 50001

The ISO 50001 energy management standard describes the requirements for the introduction, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of an energy management system. In accordance with this standard, Duravit systematically monitors and optimizes its energy consumption. ISO 50001 enables Duravit to increase energy efficiency, reduce energy costs, and lower CO2 emissions.

Certificates for water-saving products:

Unified Water Label + WaterSense

The Unified Water Label was created by an association of 75 European bathroom manufacturers. It discloses the water consumption of products, enabling an objective comparison. Duravit Toilets are classified in the green zone of the EWL scale due to their low water consumption (4.5 liters on average). Registration with WaterSense, the leading US testing organization, officially certifies that Duravit Toilets save 20 percent water compared to conventional models without compromising on function and performance.

Certificate for sustainable wood: Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC)

Duravit bathroom furniture made of wood carries the PEFC seal of approval. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is the largest institution for ensuring sustainable forest management through an independent certification system. Wood and wood products with the PEFC seal are certified as originating from ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable forestry.
