Using water responsibly: How modern bathroom design provides for a good feeling

Duravit shows how comfort, design and sustainability come together in everyday life
Water is one of our most valuable resources – and one which we are particularly prone to take for granted in our everyday lives. On average, each person in Germany uses 126 liters of drinking water per day, according to the German Federal Environment Agency. Showering, hand washing and flushing the toilet account for a large share of this total. State-of-the-art bathroom solutions can reduce water consumption substantially, without compromising on daily comfort. Simple everyday habits also help to use resources responsibly and efficiently.
Gentle technologies that make a big difference
With modern technology, much can be achieved in the bathroom without users having to alter their behavior: Water is guided with precision and used efficiently, accurately controlling the required amounts. Duravit has been applying solutions for the intelligent use of water and energy for many years.
The toilet‑flushing solutions demonstrate this particularly clearly. While older models sometimes use between 9 and 12 liters of water per flush, state-of-the-art Duravit toilets, such as the ME by Starck Hero Edition, reduce the flush volume to just 4.5 liters – while maintaining the same flushing performance. The rimless design additionally facilitates cleaning, while the 2‑in‑1‑DuraShield® protective glaze provides for hygienic cleanliness and an enduring feeling of freshness. This saves water and cuts costs.
Duravit offers efficient solutions for washbasin faucets, too: Models with MinusFlow reduce the flow rate from 5.5 l/min to 3.5 l/min, enabling savings of up to 40 per cent. Shower solutions with MinusFlow, such as the Shelf shower system, also save substantial amounts of water – up to 40 per cent with hand-held showers and even as much as 60 per cent with overhead showers.
For a two-person household, this results in savings potential of several tens of thousands of liters a year – and noticeably lower hot-water costs.
Sustainability that feels good
A sustainable bathroom is long-lasting, functional and supports its users unobtrusively in their everyday lives. Duravit applies high-quality materials, timeless design and technologies which save water and energy. This gives rise to a bathroom which is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also gives its users a good feeling.
Responsible use of water begins at home
Alongside state-of-the-art technology, simple routines also help to reduce water consumption noticeably. Spending a little less time in the shower, turning the tap off while brushing one's teeth or repairing leaks on faucets and cisterns can all make a substantial difference. Regularly descaling shower heads and faucets improves efficiency, and the stop button for toilet flushing helps to ensure that only as much water is used as is actually necessary.
