Bathrooms Around the World

October 15, 2026

Drawing on international conventions and design ideas to shape your personal style of bathroom

  • Intimate care with water: The bidet in Italy and the shower-toilet in Japan are cornerstones of daily intimate hygiene
  • American design preferences: Undercounter basins and one-piece toilets combine ceramics with continuous forms
  • Scandinavian minimalism: The Luv bathroom range by Danish designer Cecilie Manz brings gentle contours and coordinated colors into the bathroom

It is often the individual details that show just how personal a bathroom can be: everyday care rituals, the desired standard of comfort or the choice of forms and materials. These aspects also reflect cultural conventions and regional design ideas. From Japan through Italy and the USA to northern Europe, bathroom culture and design span a rich variety of styles. The influence of these different visions and approaches has long extended beyond national borders. With Duravit, familiar care routines and new design ideas can be brought together in the home – wherever it is located in the world.

Japan: Comfort at the push of a button

Warm water, a heated seat and customized comfort: In Japan, toilets featuring an electronic shower function form part of the daily routine for many people. Cleansing with water directly at the toilet is a familiar aspect of daily care and hygiene.
With SensoWash® by Duravit, this comfort can be enjoyed in any bathroom. SensoWash® Starck f allows water temperature, water spray intensity and spray wand position to be adjusted and saved individually, for example. Integrated heating ensures a pleasantly warm seat, and a hot air dryer rounds off the shower functions. Philippe Starck combines ceramics and seat in a cohesive design element within which the technical functions are discreetly integrated.

Italy: A dedicated place for hygiene

A bidet next to the toilet: This duo forms an essential part of many Italian bathrooms, where daily intimate hygiene with water has its own dedicated place in the room and the everyday routine.
Duravit takes up this custom in many design lines featuring floor-standing and wall-mounted models, such as the DuraStyle and ME by Starck ranges. The lines and proportions of the respective ranges combine toilet and bidet in an ensemble that brings care routines and bathroom design together.

USA: Integrated forms in the bathroom

A generously sized washbasin, seamlessly coupled toilet and cistern: Undercounter basins and one-piece toilets are widespread solutions in the USA. The design combines the individual elements into a harmonious whole.
Undercounter basins do not steal the limelight: Mounted beneath the countertop, they emphasize the material of which it is made while creating space for daily care essentials. Suitable models are to be found in Duravit’s Starck 3 range.
The one-piece toilet features the bowl and a visible cistern as a combined ceramic body. For Duravit Collection One, Studio F. A. Porsche has designed the transition with gentle curves which are a hallmark of the toilet's silhouette.

Denmark: Small number of elements, purposeful design

Gentle contours, muted colors and a refined approach to materials: Scandinavian minimalism creates a homely bathroom from a small number of elements. Form and color ally to lend the washing area an air of serenity.
Luv by Danish designer Cecilie Manz applies this approach to the washing area. Oval above-counter basins complement gently rounded bathroom furniture in matt finishes. Ceramics, console panels and furniture can be color-coordinated and combined to create a personal washing area.
