Building and Product Certifications with Duravit

Environmental labels such as EPDs, as well as DGNB and LEED certifications, provide a reliable foundation for the design of sustainable buildings. They facilitate the implementation of environmental standards and offer clear guidance for building design. Below is an overview of all Duravit certifications relevant to the design process.

Product-specific eco-labels:

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide standardized documentation of the environmental impacts of building products throughout their life cycle. EPDs are classified as Type III environmental labels and are based on the international standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804. They are an important tool for architects, specialist planners, engineers, and auditors, as EPDs provide comprehensive information on the environmental impacts of building materials throughout their entire life cycle, including CO2 emissions, energy and water consumption, and waste generation. EPDs can be used as supporting documentation in building certification systems such as DGNB, LEED, and BREEAM.

EPD Logo

Duravit has prepared Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its acrylic sanitary ware, ceramic sanitary ware, and DuroCast® Plus/Ultra Resist products. These documents detail the products’ environmental characteristics and provide a transparent basis for sustainable construction. The EPDs are verified and published by independent auditors and the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) in accordance with international standards.

The IBU is a leading organization for environmental product declarations in the construction industry and is committed to promoting greater transparency and resource conservation in the construction sector. As an active member, Duravit supports this initiative to provide scientifically sound environmental information and promote sustainable planning processes.

EPD for Duravit sanitary ware:

Duravit sanitaryware is formed from natural raw materials such as clay, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar and fired at over 1,200 °C. The material is exceptionally durable, long-lasting, and ideal for toilets, vanities, and bidets. The glazed finish is scratch-resistant, hygienic, and easy to clean—making it perfect for both private and high-traffic public restrooms.

EPD for Duravit's sanitary acrylic:

Duravit's sanitary acrylic is made of solid-colored acrylic that is cast into shape and then reinforced. The material is lighter than ceramic and offers a high level of comfort thanks to its non-porous, warm finish. It is primarily used for bathtubs and shower trays because it is easy to work with and feels pleasant to the touch.

EPD for DuroCast® Plus/Ultra Resist by Duravit:

DuroCast® Plus and Ultra Resist are mineral composite materials used by Duravit to manufacture freestanding vanities and bathtubs. The cast forms allow for precise designs with delicate edges, while the matte finish is particularly resistant to scratches and cleaning agents.

Building Certifications:

DGNB and LEED

DGNB Logo

German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)

As a member of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), Duravit supports the DGNB system, which enables an objective assessment of the sustainability of buildings and neighborhoods over their entire life cycle. The DGNB does not certify individual products; rather, it assesses their impact on a building’s sustainability. As part of the DGNB assessment, product information such as EPDs can be taken into account to evaluate a building’s environmental impacts and resource use.

EPDs provide important environmental metrics for this purpose—such as CO₂ emissions, resource consumption, and recyclability. In addition to EPDs, other product- and company-related evidence can be included in the assessment.

LEED Logo

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Duravit is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), thereby supporting an internationally recognized organization dedicated to promoting energy-efficient and resource-conserving buildings. A key initiative is the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system, which evaluates sustainable construction based on clear criteria.

LEED evaluates buildings based on various sustainability criteria, including energy efficiency, resource conservation, and aspects of user comfort. It also takes into account criteria related to indoor environmental quality and user experience. LEED further promotes the use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly materials—an important contribution to sustainable construction.

Company-related documentation:

ISO Standards

ISO standards are internationally recognized standards that ensure the quality, efficiency, and safety of products, systems, and services. ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization, an international association of various standardization organizations. Duravit is certified according to the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001 standards.

ISO 9001 Logo

ISO 9001

Duravit has been certified to the international ISO 9001 standard since 1999, which demonstrates compliance with quality management standards and reflects the company’s commitment to a process of continuous improvement. The certification confirms the implementation of a documented quality management system.

ISO 14001 Logo

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). The standard defines requirements for an environmental management system and aims to achieve continuous improvement in environmental performance. This includes identifying and controlling environmental impacts, complying with legal requirements, and continuously improving environmental objectives.

ISO 50001 Logo

ISO 50001

The ISO 50001 energy management standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an energy management system. In accordance with this standard, Duravit systematically monitors and optimizes its energy consumption. ISO 50001 enables Duravit to increase energy efficiency, lower energy costs, and reduce CO2 emissions.

Certifications for water-saving products:

Unified Water Label + WaterSense

The Unified Water Label was created through a collaboration among 75 European bathroom fixture manufacturers; it discloses the water consumption of products, thereby enabling an objective comparison. Numerous Duravit toilets qualify for the green category on the Unified Water Label scale based on their flush water consumption.

WaterSense-certified Duravit products meet the requirements of the EPA range and use at least 20 percent less water than the respective baseline set by U.S. regulations.

PEFC Logo

PEFC-certified wood for Duravit bathroom furniture

Duravit's bathroom furniture production is certified under the international PEFC certification system (PEFC/04-31-2357). The system (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) promotes standards for sustainable forest management and the traceability of wood throughout the supply chain. Wood and wood products bearing the corresponding label come from certified forests and controlled sources.

Rating for Companies

EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment

EcoVadis evaluates companies worldwide in terms of sustainability and responsible corporate governance. The analysis covers key areas such as the environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Based on submitted documentation, company policies, and publicly available information, a score is generated that reflects the state of a company’s sustainability frameworks. Depending on the result, EcoVadis awards bronze, silver, gold, or platinum medals, thereby enabling transparent classification within international supply chains.
