Saving water in the bathroom

Average water consumption in Germany is around 120 to 130 liters per person per day—a large portion of which is used in the bathroom, particularly for showering, bathing, and the sink area. This is precisely where there is enormous potential for savings. What steps can be taken to significantly reduce consumption without sacrificing comfort?

The most important points at a glance

In the bathroom, you can save water every day by being more mindful of your water usage and taking a few simple steps.

Modern bathroom fixtures and solutions, such as water-saving showerheads, help reduce water consumption without compromising on comfort.

Saving water not only helps protect the environment, but also lowers your (energy) costs.

Tips for saving water in the bathroom

Most of our daily water consumption occurs in the bathroom. The good news is that this means there’s plenty of water to be saved there. Here are our tips for conserving water.

1. Tips for showering

Use a water-saving showerhead

A water-saving showerhead significantly reduces overall water consumption without noticeably compromising showering comfort.

Install a flow restrictor

Flow restrictors can also automatically reduce water flow, thereby ensuring consistently lower water consumption while showering.

Person taking a shower

Take shorter showers

Just spending a few minutes less in the shower can save several liters of water every day. This way, you can save both money and water.

Turn off the water while lathering up

Don't let the water run while you're soaping up, so as not to waste fresh water.

Use a thermostatic valve

A thermostatic faucet maintains the desired temperature throughout your shower. This eliminates the need for constant adjustments and saves water while you shower

Collect water and reuse it

If you have a shower tray, plug the drain and collect the cold water until the shower water warms up. You can use the collected water to water plants or flush the toilet.

2. Tips for bathing

Showering instead of taking a bath

A bath uses significantly more water than a shower and should therefore only be taken when necessary and with care.

A Duravit bathtub filled with water

Do not fill the bathtub completely

Even slightly lowering the water level in the bathtub saves many liters of water without compromising on comfort.

Choosing Compact Bathtubs

There are special space-saving bathtubs that are smaller and use less water. They are ideal for poorly laid-out or small bathrooms.

Taking a shower or bath with your partner can not only be a pleasant, relaxing experience, but it can also save water, since it makes efficient use of the water supply.

Reuse bathwater

Slightly soiled water (greywater) from the bathtub can be reused. You can use the collected water to flush the toilets or water your plants.

3. Tips for the toilet

Use the "Save" button and "Rinse Hold"

Using the "Eco" button significantly reduces the amount of water used per flush and can save a lot of water when used daily. The same applies to a start/stop flush.

Check the toilet tank

Leaky or faulty toilet tanks can waste large amounts of water without anyone noticing, so they should be checked regularly.

Install water-saving toilets

Thanks to improved water flow and innovative features, modern toilets now use significantly less water. They also offer greater hygiene and comfort.

4. Tips for the sink

Install the spray nozzle

Aerators mix air into the water, thereby reducing water usage while maintaining the same level of comfort. By using a water-saving aerator, you can conserve water at the faucet.

Use flow restrictors

Flow restrictors help save water not only in the shower but also at the sink area. If you don’t want to switch to a water-saving faucet, you can also turn down the water supply valve under the vanity slightly to reduce the flow rate.

Use water-saving cartridges

Modern cartridges make it slightly harder to fully open the faucet, which means the faucet isn't fully open as often, thereby saving water.

Repairing Leaky Faucets

Even small leaks from a faucet can waste large amounts of water over time. Check your faucets regularly for damage or leaks.

Prefer cold water

In many cases, cold water is sufficient instead of hot water. By using cold water, you not only save water but also energy—and thus money.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth

Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can save several liters of water every day. If you also use a toothbrush cup instead of rinsing your mouth under running water, you’ll save even more.

5. Tips for the washing machine

A person is holding a full basket of laundry

Wash only when fully loaded

Avoid running the washing machine when it is not fully loaded, as water and energy are used most efficiently only when the machine is full.

Select eco and economy modes

Special eco-cycle programs help save water when doing laundry. They are designed to use energy and water efficiently.

Skip the pre-wash and fabric softener

In most cases, a pre-wash isn't strictly necessary and only increases water consumption. By avoiding fabric softener, you're also helping to protect the environment.

Select low temperatures

Modern washing machines and detergents can clean laundry reliably and efficiently even at low temperatures.
