MAMM House
Reference summary
The reinforced concrete building is located in the center of Tokyo in the Bunkyo district, which is known for its publishing and printing industry. For years, the lower area served as a printing house and the upper area as living space. Now, the completely renovated building houses both living space and studio.
During the renovation process, the architects drew inspiration from elements of the original building.
For example, it was initially planned to completely dismantle the former stairwell. However, during the dismantling, the reinforcing bars, which are used to strengthen reinforced concrete components, appeared unexpectedly beautiful. Therefore, the architects left these in place and created a "green staircase" with plants entwined around the reinforcing bars.
On the second floor, there is a bedroom, a children's room and a bathroom. A Happy D.2 washbasin has been installed in the semi-open space and, with its metal console, blends naturally into the unique atmosphere of the building. In addition, the timeless Starck bathtub creates a place of rest for body and soul.
In order to give the building's façade a new look, an attempt was made to remove the existing plaster. This revealed tiles. MAMM DESIGN decided to use these and simply polish them – as a contrast to the green of the newly planted trees. In this way, various elements were discovered during the dismantling and incorporated into the current appearance.
