The Peech
Distinctive hotel icon with a sophisticated design concept
Reference summary
James Peech's aim was always to retain the charm of the former residence and to create an incomparable atmosphere with timeless design and local arts and crafts. The bathroom fittings from Duravit fit perfectly into the sophisticated bathroom concept. In collaboration with Meshworks, the award-winning architecture studio led by Guy Trangos and Catherine de Souz, and Aparna Ramani, the design and interior design partner, a tranquil, green refuge with references to local craftsmanship has been created.
Exclusive retreat in an urban atmosphere
In the middle of the vibrant metropolis of Johannesburg, not far from the South African capital Pretoria, lies The Peech. But the boutique hotel is, contrary to expectations, removed from the hustle and bustle of the city: despite its central location, the hotel impresses with its calm and elegant atmosphere. The lush, two-hectare garden with a swimming pool invites you to linger. In addition to a fitness center and function rooms, The Peech has two restaurants, one of which is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. The second restaurant, Basalt, is known for its local and seasonal cuisine, which is perfectly paired with South African wines and introduces guests to South Africa in a very special way.
African craftsmanship and sustainable design
Since its acquisition, the hotel has been gradually expanded. Most recently, the architectural firm Meshworks completed a further extension in 2017, which provided 15 additional rooms in a very small space. The hotel's design approach combines long-lasting aesthetics with reliable functionality, with a focus on materials that are as sustainable and durable as possible. For example, the decorative wall hangings are made of rPET fabric, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. To meet the self-imposed standard of sustainable design, design and interior expert Aparna Ramani integrates products from regional designers, artists and craftsmen into the individual design of the hotel rooms: whether stonemason, carpenter or upholsterer - numerous pieces in The Peech were designed and manufactured by local talents directly on site and to measure. The rooms thus offer hotel guests a glimpse of unique African craftsmanship.
Outstanding bathroom design unites contrasts
The spacious rooms of The Peech, with their separate bathrooms, are decorated in an eclectic style that ingeniously illustrates the contrast between tradition and modernity. Part of the long-lasting design concept is the sanitary ware from Duravit: the striking DuraSquare washbasin from the Black Forest complete bathroom specialist overcomes the apparent contradiction between the precise, rectangular design on the outside and the softer, flowing lines on the inside of the basin.
The particularly thin washbasin looks contrasting and at the same time weightlessly elegant, especially in combination with the metal console.
The countertop washbasins installed from the D-Neo complete bathroom series, which manage without a tap hole bench and overflow, are placed directly on the wooden substructure thanks to their polished underside. The mix of materials, ceramic and wood, creates an exciting contrast that blends harmoniously into the overall concept. The Starck free-standing bathtub, a creation by French designer Philippe Starck, and the DuraStyle wall-hung toilet harmoniously round off the exclusive bathroom design.
