Production process for mineral cast bathtubs
Mineral cast is a modern bathtub material that consists of a mixture of natural minerals, color pigments and synthetic resin as a binder. But not all mineral castings are the same. Mineral cast bathtubs vary depending on the material composition and manufacturing method, and differ in terms of the mixing ratio and the type of rock. The latter includes, for example, crushed quartz or volcanic rock.
To produce mineral cast bathtubs of the highest quality, it is necessary to have control over every step of the production process. At Duravit, we therefore ensure that a high-precision mold is made by our own specialists, based on the design of the mineral cast bathtub. The recipe for the casting material is also developed by Duravit itself. Only through mutual coordination can the high manufacturing quality be guaranteed.

Cast mineral in a mold
The mineral materials, resin and hardener are mixed fully automatically in the appropriate mixing ratio under vacuum and then poured into a mold as a liquid product. Mixing under vacuum prevents air bubbles in the casting.

Hardening of the mineral cast bathtub
It can take up to twelve hours to dry a bathtub made of mineral casting. This process is divided into two drying phases, which can be accelerated by applying a small amount of heat. However, care should be taken here, as too much heat can cause stress cracks. DuroCast® bathtubs usually consist of two shells: the inside of the bathtub and the outer wall, which are joined together during the process using an adhesive and then have to harden again.

Manual finishing – drilling, gluing & sanding
Once the mineral cast bathtub has completely hardened, it can be lifted out of the mold. Holes can then be drilled for the drain, overflow, and faucet. After that, the tub and the cladding are glued together with a two-component adhesive and the glued areas are sanded by hand so that a completely even surface is created and no seam is visible. This can take several hours.

Quality inspection
Before the mineral cast bathtub is packed and shipped to the customer, the finish, drill holes and dimensions of each individual tub are checked and approved by the quality manager under special lighting of over 1000 lux. Different angles of incidence are also simulated. If the mineral cast tub passes the quality control, it is handed over to the shipping department.
