Everyone can save energy and water – anytime, anywhere. But how can you do this easily and effectively in your everyday life? Are there any tips on saving energy and water that can be followed? And how can bathroom faucets and shower heads help?

Water consumption and potential savings in Germany

Although not immediately apparent to most people in their everyday lives, it is nevertheless a fact that the amount of drinking water available worldwide is steadily decreasing. This is a real problem, as it is having an increasingly negative impact on both the environment and our wallets. And yet, an average of 127 liters of drinking water are consumed per person per day in Germany.¹ What can we do about it? It is important to raise social awareness of drinking water consumption and to actively save water.

MinusFlow on a Duravit Tulum faucet

Save water with MinusFlow

MinusFlow saves water automatically. A flow limiter in the aerator limits the flow rate from the outset. This significantly reduces consumption.

Fact: MinusFlow limits the flow rate of sink faucets from a maximum of 5.5 l/min to 3.5 l/min. This corresponds to savings of up to 40% of the water flowing out. Hand showers also offer savings of up to 40%, and overhead showers even up to 60%. This means annual savings of up to $144.50 for sink faucets, up to $1,079.195 for hand showers, and up to $2,697.97 for overhead showers.

Soft water jet thanks to AirPlus

Save water with AirPlus

Thanks to the AirPlus feature, the water jet is additionally enriched with air. This not only saves water, but also makes the jet pleasantly full and soft and ensures less water splashing around the sink. AirPlus is available for standard fittings and for the respective MinusFlow variants.

Fact: AirPlus combines water saving with extra comfort.

Save energy with FreshStart

Single-lever mixers in the energy-saving FreshStart version only supply cold water when the lever is in the middle position. For hot water, the lever must be actively turned to the left. This means that the water is only heated when it is actually needed. And the visually appealing middle position of the handle can also be used without unnecessary hot water consumption.

Fact: Duravit FreshStart faucets offer full control over hot water consumption and therefore effectively reduce energy consumption in everyday life. With FreshStart, a family of four can save an average of over 300 kg of CO² per year², which corresponds to 751.33 kWh or up to $277.99.*

Tips for saving water in the bathroom

1. Use water-saving faucets

The right faucets can help a lot when it comes to saving energy and water. All Duravit faucets are water-saving as standard. Selected products also have helpful features such as MinusFlow and AirPlus, which further enhance this property. This makes it easy to save water when showering, washing your hands, and bathing.

2. Economical & rimless toilets

Rimless toilets have the great advantage of being particularly easy to clean without using much water. Don't underestimate the practical dual-flush technology of flush plates with two options: small button, big savings. To actively save water, we recommend only selecting the larger flush volume when it is actually needed.

3. Jet regulator

Whether it's a water-saving shower head or a flow regulator to save water at the sink, it's definitely worth making sure that your faucets actively limit the amount of water they use. At Duravit, the MinusFlow feature fulfills this purpose.

4. Hygiene glazes

If less effort is required to clean bathroom ceramics, this can also save water. The innovative 2-in-1 Duravit DuraShield® ceramic glaze ensures that dirt cannot adhere, thus preventing it from building up. The positively charged metal ions contained in the glaze form an antibacterial coating which also contributes to easier cleaning of the toilet and thus to water savings.

5. Turn off the water in between

In many places, water can be saved by turning off the tap while not in use. For example, the water often runs while soaping your hands or brushing your teeth. It is also easy to save water when showering by turning off the shower head while shampooing.

Tips for saving energy in the bathroom

1. Ventilate and heat properly

You can save energy by ventilating and heating correctly. The most energy-efficient way to ventilate is to air rooms thoroughly three to four times a day, as well as after a shower or bath, as these produce a lot of steam. It is essential to turn off the heating when ventilating. It is also not necessary to keep the bathroom heated all the time – it is better to turn up the temperature shortly before you want to take a shower or bath.

2. Use thermostats

Thermostats keep the water temperature constant and compensate for pressure fluctuations. In this way, they can help to save energy. The HeatLock feature also prevents the water temperature from being accidentally set above 38 °C. This not only protects against scalding, but also ensures that water is not heated unnecessarily.

3. Pay attention to small electrical appliances

From electric razors to electric toothbrushes, bathrooms contain numerous small electrical appliances, many of which need to be charged regularly. However, to save energy, charging should not be a permanent state. Unplug appliances or charging stations from the power outlet when they are not in use and can be operated on battery power.

4. Light source

You can also save energy by choosing the right light bulbs. Duravit mirrors and mirror cabinets use LED lights, which consume less energy than conventional bulbs and are also very durable.
